André Marcel Harris is a recent graduate of Fayetteville State University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree and was a Ronald E. McNair Scholar. In the Summer of 2020 André will begin graduate studies at University of Houston’s Graduate College of Social Work pursuing an MSW/PhD dual degree. During André’s undergraduate career at Fayetteville State University, he was an active member of the National Association of Social Workers, National Association of Black Social Workers, North American Association of Christians in Social Work, Council of Social Work Education, American Public Health Association, Phi Alpha Social Work Honor Society and the Wellness Ambassadors. André had the privilege of studying abroad at Fudan University in Shanghai, China during the Summer of 2017, and interning at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in Washington, DC during the Fall of 2017.  During the Summer of 2019, André served as a Youth Health Equity Model of Practice (YHEMOP) Health Equity Fellow funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Minority Health, placed at the Foundation of Sickle Cell Disease Research in Hollywood, Florida. During his service as a Health Equity Fellow André was responsible for improving equitable services for sickle cell patients in the South Florida and Rural Florida communities. 

André’s professional goals include him working to influence health equity for Sickle Cell patients, providing quality resources to address disparities in black men’s health and providing psychosocial support and resources for male sexual assault survivors. Mr. Harris would like to one day be the Director of a Community Based Organization or a Nonprofit Organization that supports these programs and also dreams to create housing for those who suffer with sickle cell disease, rare and chronic disease and to also create innovative programs to address the social needs of sickle cell patients. André’s research interest focuses on social determinants of health, black men’s health, and black male sexual assault survivors.
